Academic Resource
The purpose of the academic resource department is two-fold.
The first is Reading Recovery, a research based, short
intervention program for the neediest first graders.
Children meet
one-on-one with a specially trained teacher for 30 minutes
daily for 12 to 20 weeks. During this time, the Reading
Recovery
teacher brings these students up to grade level in fluency
and comprehension skills.
The second purpose of the resource department is to
assist the academic teachers in identifying and working
with those students who need additional assistance in
Language Arts and Math. The resource specialist works
to assist and enable students in producing effective
strategies for working on text reading (meaning, structure,
visual and phonetic cues), as well as encourages and
reinforces independent operating, problem detection,
and problem solving in reading, writing and math.
Counseling Services
Akiba has two trained counselors who provide twenty-eight
hours of coverage per week. They are present on Campus
some part of every day. Children can be referred by
teachers, administrators, parents, or through their
own request or counselor observation. Sessions are also
held with parents when appropriate. The counselors work
as part of a team, helping to coordinate services to
students with a holistic approach. When identified problems
require more intensive intervention, the counselors
refer to community resources.
Many group sessions occur weekly, mainly focusing on
personal growth, anger management, and social skills.
Programs such as Second Step and Youth Connection are
used, with accommodations made to address specific,
relevant topics. The counselors also set up presentations
for parents, children and/or teachers on topics of interest,
such as eating disorders, bullying prevention, and parenting
skills.
