History

The first Akiba alumni event was held in September 2001 during the weekend of the annual dinner, whose theme was “The First 30 Years of Akiba”. A video was shown that took all attendees down Memory Lane into their and the school’s history. Fifty-three alumni and former students gathered at Akiba Academy (at the Churchill location) for brunch and to catch up on old times with fellow classmates.

With a terrific show of support from so many alumni and former students, Stuart Wernick ’78 and Robert Liener ’74 knew it was a great time to begin a database of names and addresses of all persons
who attended Akiba, graduates and former students, and to start coordinating future activities. An alumni association was born.

In 2004, the Akiba Alumni and Former Students Association (AAFSA) was created. Robert Liener ’74 became the first Board Chairman. The first AAFSA event was an alumni brunch on the morning of the Civic Service Award Dinner in October. Other events have included AAFSA’s ‘Young Alum’ Get-Together at Café Fino, the Annual Spring Career Day Series, and the Class of 1980’s 25th Year Reunion weekend.

The strength of Akiba lies not only in its student body and its educators, but also in the AAFSA.
